EIP-4844 (Proto-Danksharding)
EIP-4844, shipped in the Cancun-Deneb upgrade in March 2024, added a new transaction type that carries large data "blobs" outside the main execution data. Blobs are pruned after about 18 days, which makes them much cheaper than calldata. Rollups use blobs to post their compressed transaction data to L1, which is the main reason L2 fees dropped sharply after the upgrade.
