Sidechain
A sidechain is an independent blockchain that pegs to another chain through a bridge but does not inherit security from it. Polygon PoS, Gnosis Chain, and Liquid are all sidechains by this definition. The trade-off is more sovereignty than a rollup gives, in exchange for weaker security guarantees.
