TVL (Total Value Locked)
TVL measures the total dollar value of assets deposited in a protocol. DeFi dashboards (DeFiLlama in particular) use it as the headline metric for adoption. TVL has real limitations as a quality signal: it can be inflated by recursive lending, by mercenary capital chasing emissions, or by a single large depositor, and it tells you nothing about volume or revenue.
