API

An API is the contract that defines how two pieces of software exchange data. In crypto, the term usually refers to either a chain-level interface (JSON-RPC on EVM chains, REST on Hyperliquid) or a service-level interface (an exchange or data provider). Most user-facing crypto applications never talk to a chain directly: they go through an API maintained by an RPC provider, indexer, or exchange.
