Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)

A CBDC is a digital form of central bank money — distinct from commercial bank deposits and from cryptocurrencies. Some implementations use blockchain infrastructure, others use centralized ledgers maintained by the issuing institution. Design choices on privacy, programmability, and offline use vary widely between jurisdictions and remain politically contested.
