Fork
A fork is what happens when nodes in a network start following different rules and the chain splits in two. A soft fork tightens rules without breaking older clients; a hard fork loosens or changes them and requires every node to upgrade. The Ethereum Merge in 2022 was a hard fork; Bitcoin Cash splitting from Bitcoin in 2017 was a contentious one.
