Network Fork

A network fork happens when nodes diverge on which chain is canonical. Sometimes the divergence is brief (two valid blocks at the same height, resolved within seconds) and sometimes it is permanent (a hard fork producing two chains, like Ethereum / Ethereum Classic in 2016).
