L1 (Layer 1)

Layer 1 refers to a base blockchain that handles its own consensus, settlement, and execution — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Hyperliquid. The term gained currency when Layer 2s started appearing in the Ethereum ecosystem. A Layer 1 does not depend on another chain for security.
