Shard
A shard is a partition of a chain's state and transaction load. Sharded designs run several shards in parallel and let the chain process more transactions per second than a single one could. Ethereum originally planned execution sharding and pivoted toward rollups; other chains (Near, Aptos) implement variants of the idea.
