Virtual Machine (VM)
A virtual machine is a sandboxed execution environment that runs bytecode in a deterministic, reproducible way. The EVM is the most familiar example, but Solana's SVM, the Move VM, and CosmWasm all play the same role for their respective chains. The choice of VM mostly determines which languages developers can use and which existing code they can reuse.
